When it comes to film, it’s really been hit or miss for DC comic characters. On one hand, we got The Dark Knight which is held in regard as the greatest comic book movie of all time, but on the other, we also got movies like Suicide Squad which was… okay. That in mind, Man of Steel was alright and their last film, Wonder Woman, was quite the feat. Of course, if you’ve been following their most recent string of movies, ever since Man of Steel, they’ve been trying to pull off what Marvel has been perfecting for years with a comic book super hero cinematic universe where the movies all connect. In this case, it started with Man of Steel, and we knew this was coming since Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. So, here we are a couple years later, and for the first time, we finally get a theatrical Justice League movie.

For those of you who are unaware, the Justice League is the DC comics equivalent of The Avengers; an amalgamation of super heroes on a large team who assemble and work together to take down threats too large for one of them to handle on their own. The team, while quite large in the comics, is typically represented by and composed of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter, although Green Lantern is indirectly mentioned a couple times in the movie via a flashback featuring the Lantern Corps. With that in mind, when we take a look at the current lineup for the movie, we’ve got Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg. If you’re reading this and feel like it’s missing something, you couldn’t be more correct. While the lineup we get IS good, especially since it features Cyborg who is commonly left out of the team, and Superman DOES have a reason made apparent by Batman vs. Superman as to why he isn’t in the movie (temporarily), but leaving out two of the most important members just makes it feel kind of empty. Anyways, that issue aside, onto the actual film itself.

After the events of both Suicide Squad and Batman vs. Superman, Batman decides to assemble a team of heroes to prepare for any and all major threats that may come along. But, he may need that team more than he knew when an army of Parademons led by their leader, Steppenwolf, are awoken after the death of Superman to conquer the land in an attempt to please the greater power pulling their strings. This big bad boss of the DC cinematic universe isn’t Doomsday, but rather Darkseid. That’s right, DC is trying to do what the MCU has been doing for roughly 10 years, now, which is to create an intertwined cinematic universe that connects one movie to another without being outright sequels where the characters from the individual movies join together in one big movie to tackle a larger threat than usual. Anyways, Steppenwolf’s target is three objects called Mother Boxes. The boxes are objects of pure power which he seeks to gain strength from and essentially level all of humanity. However, the boxes were hidden in three different places with one box in each: one was hidden in the Amazon, one in Atlantis, and the last was hidden away by humans. So, it’s a race against Steppenwolf and his parademons to locate the boxes or keep one protected at the very least in an effort to thwart him and prevent the destruction of those in his path.

I will say, though, it was actually good. Now, this sounds like a given for a superhero movie, but remember, this studio also made Suicide Squad which was alright, Man of Steel which was… not that bad, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice which was okay, and Wonder Woman, a movie that was actually really good. I hope that this spells better days for these films, especially since they’ve proved that they CAN do good DC comic movies. Even with that being said, I still stand by my opinion that while Marvel has the best films, DC has the superior comics.

I should probably stop before I make more people who take comic book movies too seriously even more mad at me than they are, now. Would I recommend the movie? Yes, but right now, the only thing even better than this film at the moment that features the Justice League is the game Injustice 2. At least that game makes everyone happy compared to some of the fans’ reactions to this movie.
