Every year, Valentine’s Day is held on February 14 to celebrate love around the world. Some people dislike this day because they do not have a significant other; however, Valentine’s Day is also about showing love to your family and friends. Many people buy their friends small gifts such as a stuffed animal or chocolate. The first Valentine’s Day was in the year 496. Having a Valentine’s Day is a very old tradition, thought to have originated from a Roman festival.

Valentine’s Day has been a controversial topic about whether it should be an actual holiday or not. Some people believe it is not fair to others who are not dating or married to someone. However, Valentine’s Day should also be a day to show love to not just significant others but your friends and family. I believe that it should continue to be a national holiday because it is very important to show others how much you care about them.

During Valentine’s Day, students in schools up until about 5th grade usually make boxes that they can decorate with construction paper and other small decorations. Then they buy small cards that come with different kinds of candy. They pass them out to each of the students in their class and put them in their decorated boxes. This is another reason I believe Valentine’s Day should continue to be celebrated because these boxes are something many young students look forward to. Especially if they are having a rough time at home, these cards and candy could really make their day.
