Student in the Spotlight: Mason Marshall takes on lead role in spring play

Mason Marshall, a freshman here at Clearfield Area Jr.-Sr. High School, has been selected to be the male lead role in this year’s spring musical, Aida: The Timeless Love Story.

Q. What role are you playing in the CHS 2020 spring musical, Aida the Timeless Love Story?
A. “I will be playing the role of Radames, an Egyptian army general.”

Q. When does rehearsal begin for the spring musical?
A. “In February.”

Q. How many hours a week, on average, do you spend memorizing your lines/song lyrics?
A. “I would say about 20 hours a week, listening to the music really helps in the memorizing process.”

Q. How does it feel to be playing the male lead role in a musical as a freshman?
A. “It feels amazing that I have the chance to play this role with a very talented cast.”

Q. How many years have you been a part of theatre programs?
A. “I have been a part of the theatre program for 3 years.”

Q. What obstacles have you overcome over the time you’ve been in theatre?
A. “When you’ve been in theatre for a little while, you begin to feel comfortable on stage, and the stage fright just goes away as you focus on the scene you’re in.”

Q. How did you prepare for your audition?
A. “I prepared for my audition by learning a song and my monologue for the show.”

Q. What advice would you give to those who are interested in joining the theatre program?
A. “I would advise people to follow through with it. The drama club is a big family and we always have a great time around each other; follow your heart.”

Q. How do you manage your time with school, sports and theatre?
A. “It takes a lot of time management and late work to get everything done, but I am thankful that my coaches and teachers can work around my other activities.”

Q. Is there anything else the readers should know about your preparation/experience, so far, for the musical?
A. “It is going to be a very exciting show with a very talented cast. I hope you can come out and see it in April.”
