Clearfield Bison Wrestling Status

The 2022-23 wrestling season has been well underway. The team has won fifteen of seventeen dual meets, achieved first place at the Clearfield Bison Duals, and placed third at the Thomas Automotive Tournament. Now, they are on the rocky road to states. On February 14ththe District 9 AA tournament takes place at Clarion University. If you place top four, you advance to the North West AA Regional tournament at the Sharon High School on March 3rd. Again, if you are in the top four, you can go to the PIAA AA Championships is at the Giant Center in Hershey on March 9th. With Pennsylvania having some of the hardest competition in this sport, wrestlers Colton Ryan (freshman), Brady Collins (sophomore), Carter Chamberlain (junior), and Evan Davis (senior) have excelled so far this season. The four wrestlers were interviewed with various questions on past accomplishments and future goals.
Colton Ryan (Freshman):
1. Are you ready for the road to States?
Although it is my first year on varsity, I am feeling prepared.
2. What is your go-to weigh-in snack?
My go-to weigh-in snack is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
3. What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite wrestling memory is winning a very important match at the Clearfield Bison Duals. If I won, the team could advance.
4. What is your favorite quote from coach?
“Stay off your back.” -Coach Aveni
5. What is your greatest wrestling accomplishment?
My greatest wrestling accomplishment is placing at the Tom Best Memorial Top Hat Tournament and at the Thomas Automotive Tournament.
6. What weight do you wrestle, and what is your go-to move or shot?
I wrestle 127 and my favorite shot is a fireman’s carry.
7. Who is your favorite wrestler or who do you look up to the most?
I look up to Kyle Dake.
8. What do you do to prepare for matches and tournaments?
I prepare by listening to music and jogging around to warm up.
9. What are your goals for this season?
I hope to make it to states as a freshman.
10. What do you do in practice to help ensure success?
I go over what I did wrong in previous matches to ensure success.
11. Is there anything else you want to say, or do you have advice to younger wrestlers?
Make sure you never cry.
Brady Collins (Sophomore):
1. Are you ready for the road to States?
I am just about ready.
2. What is your go-to weigh-in snack?
My go-to weigh-in snack is a peanut butter covered banana.
3. What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite wrestling memory is the States trip from last year.
4. What is your favorite quote from coach?
“Tired of you losing.” -Coach Aveni
5. What is your greatest wrestling accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is making it to States as a freshman.
6. What weight do you wrestle, and what is your go-to move or shot?
I wrestle 139 and my favorites are a sweep single or a knee pull.
7. Who is your favorite wrestler or who do you look up to the most?
I look up to David Taylor.
8. What do you do to prepare for matches and tournaments?
I try to clear my mind and don’t think.
9. What are your goals for this season?
I want to be the state champ at the PIAA State Tournament.
10. What do you do in practice to help ensure success?
I work as hard as I can all the time.
11. Is there anything else you want to say, or do you have advice to younger wrestlers?
Self-belief is the biggest part of winning.
Carter Chamberlain (Junior):
1. Are you ready for the road to States?
I am not quite ready for the road to States.
2. What is your go-to weigh-in snack?
My go-to weigh-in snacks are applesauce and rice cakes.
3. What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite memory is going to Bass Pro Shops with the team last year at States.
4. What is your favorite quote from coach?
“I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.” -Coach Aveni
5. What is your greatest wrestling accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is placing 8th at the PIAA State Tournament in 2022.
6. What weight do you wrestle, and what is your go-to move or shot?
I wrestle 189 and my two go-to shots are a fireman’s carry or an underhook knee pull.
7. Who is your favorite wrestler or who do you look up to the most?
My favorite wrestler is Bo Nickal.
8. What do you do to prepare for matches and tournaments?
I always drink a lot of water before going on the mat, and I do not focus on it until it is time.
9. What are your goals for this season?
I will be working hard to place top five at the 2023 PIAA State Tournament.
10. What do you do in practice to help ensure success?
I always push myself.
11. Is there anything else you want to say, or do you have advice to younger wrestlers?
Worrying just means that you have to suffer twice.
Evan Davis (Senior):
1. Are you ready for the road to States?
Yes, I am ready.
2. What is your go-to weigh-in snack?
My go-to weigh-in snack is a peanut butter and jelly with a Propel.
3. What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite memory is Coach Aveni tackling Hayden through the basement doors.
4. What is your favorite quote from coach?
“Scorin Doran on the mat.”- Coach Squires
5. What is your greatest wrestling accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment is making it to States in 2022.
6. What weight do you wrestle, and what is your go-to move or shot?
I wrestle 123 and my favorite move is a cross face cradle.
7. Who is your favorite wrestler or who do you look up to the most?
My favorite wrestler is Roman Bravo-Young.
8. What do you do to prepare for matches and tournaments?
I prepare by listening to music and stretching.
9. What are your goals for this season?
My personal goal is to place at the PIAA State Tournament this year.
10. What do you do in practice to help ensure success?
I work hard each practice and focus on what I do wrong to only improve.
11. Is there anything else you want to say, or do you have advice to younger wrestlers?
Never give up and always work hard.
