Throughout high school students work hard so that a college will notice and accept them or in the hopes that they can get a scholarship somewhere. Students like to take every advantage they can to achieve this. One such example the students with high honors may receive is an induction into the National Honor Society (NHS).

Dr. Spaid, the junior and senior class counselor and NHS advisor, was able to answer a few questions about this spring’s NHS induction. According to Dr. Spaid, “Each student must have a weighted GPA of 90% and not have any significant discipline referrals. I pull the students’ records and give them to Mr. Janocko to review.  Once we hand out the applications, we send the list of names to a team of teachers selected by the principals and they then review the nominations and vote to admit the students.” As well as having a high GPA, the NHS also looks at students who do community service, show positive character traits, and demonstrate leadership skills.

While it comes down to a teacher/principle vote, there is no limit to how many students can be inducted. You can, however, be removed from NHS if you do not follow the guidelines of it. These include showing upstanding behavior and not cheating in high school. In addition, Dr. Spaid states, “It is a highly recognizable honor that is valued by college admission representatives and employers.  It’s also a chance to work on projects to benefit our community and school.  It is representative of a student’s hard work academically, his or her character, and his or her leadership skills.” For students who want to get a step ahead, being inducted into National Honor Society should be one of your high school goals.
