What’s the holiday season without the warmth of festive movies that bring families together and spread joy and nostalgia to all ages? Some examples of my favorite Christmas films include the following classics: “The Polar Express” (2004) , “Home Alone” (1990), “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (1966), and “Elf” (2003). When people think of Christmas films, these are some of the many that come to mind. Let’s discuss my criticisms and praises for each of them.
“The Polar Express” has magical animation and heartwarming story, especially for its time. Though, the groundbreaking motion-capture animation style is somewhat unsettling, and many would agree. Furthermore, I do not believe the film effectively captures the spirit of Chris Van Allsburg’s book. However, the film was captivating and charming as it featured Tom Hanks’ skilled performance.
“Home Alone” is a classic for its blend of comedy and heartwarming moments. The slapstick humor and memorable traps arranged by young Kevin McCallister are iconic. However, the plot seems preposterous and the film’s occasional violence, although comedic, might not be suitable for every family audience. Some argue that the movie isn’t a Christmas one at all. Regardless, this is one of my favorite Christmas classics.
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” from 1966 is celebrated for Dr. Seuss’ storytelling and its timeless message. Although the animation is outdated, the modern remakes are no match for this classic. However, I would not mind if they made a more extended exploration of the narrative beyond what they did with the Jim Carrey version in 2000.
“Elf” displays Will Ferrell’s comedic acting and has become a modern holiday classic. Personally, I believe that the humor is too outlandish, and it is not my cup of tea in terms of comedic style. My twelve-year-old self fit into the demographic this movie targeted, but now, it is not as funny to me. For that reason, I cannot consider this movie “timeless”, but it is up there in terms of the best Christmas movies.
These Christmas movie classics have left a permanent mark on holiday entertainment. While each film has faced its fair share of criticisms, it is the unique blend of strengths and weaknesses that contributes to their appeal. These movies are still cherished by audiences, reminding us that the holiday season is not just about perfection, but also about the imperfect yet beautiful moments.
