Krampus is a legendary figure originating from Alpine folklore, specifically in the regions of Austria, Germany, and other parts of Central Europe. He is often depicted as a horned, anthropomorphic creature with a demonic appearance. The name “Krampus” is derived from the German word “Krampen,” which means “claw.”
According to folklore, Krampus is said to be the companion of Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved children with gifts during the Christmas season. While Saint Nicholas brings gifts, Krampus is responsible for dealing with the naughty ones. He is believed to punish misbehaving children by swatting them with birch branches or even taking them away in a sack to his lair.
Krampus is often portrayed wearing chains, symbolizing his ability to bind and restrain mischievous children. He also carries a bundle of birch branches or a whip to swat those who have been naughty. His most distinctive feature is his terrifying appearance, with large horns, sharp fangs, and a long, pointed tongue.
The tradition of Krampus dates back centuries, with various rituals and parades held in his honor. In many Alpine communities, there is an annual Krampus Nacht (Krampus Night) celebration, where people dress up as Krampus and roam the streets, scaring both children and adults alike.
While Krampus may seem frightening, his purpose is to remind children to be well-behaved and to appreciate the holiday season. It serves as a cautionary tale, encouraging good behavior and discouraging naughty actions. I don’t believe in the folklore personally, but I do see how something like this myth could be thought of non-fiction (Geller, 2017). I still don’t understand how such a jolly holiday could turn out to have such an evil spirit involved in it.
