Determined to shatter records and set new benchmarks, senior Carter Chamberlain has transformed the wrestling mat into his own personal stage through dedication to the sport and self-discipline when it comes to getting things done. Not everyone has the opportunity to have a one-on-one talk with a Division One athlete, but I’ve had the opportunity to participate in sports with him during my own high school career and get to know him on a personal level.
I asked him how he prepares for a big game or event, and he explained to me that he mainly listens to music and prays and sometimes warms up. His most memorable moment is when he won his Blood Round match at States in 2022. He also told me that his biggest influence is Jesus, and that he lets Him guide his choices and that is part of why he is so successful. His favorite part about being on the team is the way that the team is like a family more than any other sport that he’s been a part of. He said they are all close, so it even makes things like conditioning fun.
I asked him about how he balances schoolwork and sports and is still so talented in both. He told me that he uses his free time in school to get everything done rather than using it for fun like most; this just goes to show how self-disciplined and motivated he is.
If your someone reading this that wants to follow in Carter’s footsteps someday, this is what he has to tell you: “Work like your success is up to you, and pray like it’s up to God.” The last thing we discussed was something that non-athletes/wrestlers don’t know about being an athlete, and what he said was truly motivational. He explained, “People who don’t wrestle don’t really understand the commitment it takes. Things like cutting weight and getting in shape are unlike any other sport, and it takes an incredible amount of discipline. Wrestling shaped me into a better person and it does that to everyone who is in the sport long enough.”
I think I speak for everyone at Clearfield High School when I say we are proud of you, Carter, and we wish you the best in your future.
