Meet Mr. Way, who works in the school library here at Clearfield Area Jr-Sr High School, with five years of experience and a passion for inspiring students to love reading.
Q: How long have you been working as a librarian at the Clearfield Area Jr-Sr High School, and what inspired you to pursue this career?
A: This Is my 5th year. I was inspired by a fellow teacher who believed in my ability to be a librarian.
Q: Can you share a memorable success story or experience you’ve had while working as a school librarian?
A: My greatest satisfaction is seeing students’ desire to read increase through their high school years.
Q: How do you encourage a love for reading and learning among students?
A: By encouraging them to use their technology to search for books about subjects that they personally are interested in.
Q: In what ways do you collaborate with teachers to support the curriculum and enhance students’ learning experiences?
A: We are lucky to have exceptional library aides who provide great ideas and encouragement. Together, we work with teachers to make library resources available to teachers who want to expand what they teach by incorporating further individual research or personal projects.
Q: How has your role here at the Clearfield Area Jr-Sr High School evolved, especially with technological advancements?
A: When it comes to technology, we strive to serve the many needs we encounter as best we can. The goal is to reduce downtime, so student learning is at its greatest.
Q: What challenges do you face in your position, and how do you overcome them?
A: Making sure students are responsible for the items they borrow. Responsibility is essential to success.
Q: Can you describe a typical day in your role as a school librarian?
A: They are never the same, which keeps it interesting. I spend a lot of time at the computer maintaining our inventory and communicating with students and staff. There is also a lot of scheduling required for class needs, testing, and other coverage that can pop up at any time.
Q: What do you enjoy most about being a librarian in a school environment?
A: Getting to know students and their interests to help them find the best information available.
Q: How do you inspire reluctant readers to enjoy books?
A: Helping them figure out what they are interested in and them realizing reading is rewarding. Student helpers can be very helpful by sharing what they are reading or have read and encouraging their friends.
Q: Can you recommend some of your favorite books or authors that you often suggest to students?
A: One of my favorite books in our library is Sneaker Century by Amber Keyser. You’ll need to read it to find out why.
