For June, the athlete spotlight is Ruby Singleton! She has broken a bunch of records in softball here at school. Her most recent records broken include the doubles and career hits records; when asked if she had planned on breaking the records, she said, “I did not plan on doing either so it was all a surprise.” She has been playing softball since she was 10 years old, so she has been playing for around 7 years.
When I asked her about sports overall, she mentioned that sports, especially softball, had introduced her to many of her closest friends and has played a huge role in who she is today. Her favorite moment this season “was either [her] pregame rituals with [her] hitting partners or hitting a home run on the Hollidaysburg field.” Her most memorable moment in softball was winning States in 2022.
A few of her biggest role models include Sis Bates and Jayda Coleman for softball and her sister, Scarlett, in cross country. When asked why her sister is her role model for cross country, she said, “She’s my big sister. After she graduated and I wanted to do cross country, it felt like she was still at home, every step of the way. She’s an excellent runner and inspired me to keep trying no matter what and is part of the reason I loved cross country so much.”
Ruby stated, “I greatly enjoy playing softball. Sports/activities have been a very important part of my life since I was young.” I also asked what other sports she has played, and she said she used to play volleyball, but this past fall she ran cross country. This upcoming fall she will be playing at softball Indiana University of Pennsylvania as well as majoring in Environmental Engineering. Outside of softball and sports she likes to read, work out, craft, and nap.
Over Ruby’s four years in high school, she has broken many records, and shows amazing skill and love for sports. We wish her all the best of luck in her college career!
