Coming up soon is the 2024 Presidential Election. This election is highly anticipated. For more information and advice on the upcoming election, Mr. Wright was interviewed. He gave both his opinion and educated knowledge to encourage people to get out and vote.
In the beginning of the interview, Mr. Wright was questioned on why the 2024 election is so important to the future of the country. His response was a list of five things: policy direction, representation, judicial appointments, voter engagement, and social issues. When discussing policy direction, Wright claimed, “The outcome will shape key policies on issues like healthcare, education, climate change, and the economy, influencing the quality of life for many citizens.” To the youngest generation that can now vote, climate change is a big concern.
In reference to representation, Mr. Wright said, “Elections determine who represents the public’s interests and values, affecting local, state, and federal governance.” Every voter needs to vote for someone that they believe best represents the American people. Next, Mr. Wright discussed that whoever gets elected will have the power to appoint judges, which could be very impactful. He also talked about voter engagement, stating that if more people show up and vote, it can create a more active democracy and affect future elections.
The final point he made was about social issues. Mr. Wright stated, “Elections can address critical social justice issues, shaping how society evolves in terms of equality and rights.” This first part of the interview was very impactful and helpful to voters of all ages, but especially to the young adults.
The amount of young people who do not vote is higher than it should be. Mr. Wright stated, “Young people are the least likely demographic to vote. Sadly, they could be the most powerful demographic. Voting gives you a voice, empowers you and drives future change and progress.” His reply shows how he believes that we need more young people to vote.
A huge problem among young voters is that they are uninformed, though this can apply to all age groups. When asked how younger generations should inform themselves, his response was: “Sadly, yes. This problem is not confined to the younger generation. All citizens should try and broaden their horizons when it comes to news. There are many competing media that are great at grabbing attention. It is up to the consumer of news to try and decipher truth from fiction. He also said that the best way to and the truth is to learn critical thinking skills and obtain a variety of viewpoints on any news story. His answer adds another point into the mix: the news can spread false information. It is up to each of us to identify the false information.
To help with the lack of information in the younger age groups, Mr. Wright was asked if voting and citizenship should be taught in schools. From a teacher, this answer is important. He replied, “Yes! But in a politically neutral way that doesn’t take sides.” He believes that all people should learn about the issues and how to engage with them through critical thinking, because civic education is very important… even if you aren’t wild about the candidates.”Many teachers claim that their job is to prepare you for the real world, and who we vote for is such a big part of our future.
Finally, Mr. Wright was asked, “What is your advice to young voters on how to pick a candidate to vote for?” He answered: Vote on the issues that matter to you and find out what the candidates stand for. Also, find out what the party platform is for that candidate. This is often overlooked, but also very important.” We should all take to proper steps to informing ourselves and voting for the things we all personally find important. If you’re able, go vote in the 2024 Presidential Election!
