The cardiovascular system is the most important in our body; it contains the heart, the veins, and the arteries. The cardiovascular system is responsible for keeping us alive to pump blood though the body. According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and cardiovascular disease effect millions of people every year and 1 in 4 deaths in the U.S. are related to the heart.

The American Heart Association is an organization that fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke. Schools from all around the country participate in a fund-raiser called the “Queen of Hearts” to help raise money for this organization.

At the Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High School, senior girls who are involved in service clubs raise money for this organization. Mrs. Borden, who helps coordinate this fund-raiser, explains: “Fund-raising takes place during the month of February. Student create online donation pages via the Heart Association, set out collection cans, host the Queen of Hearts Semi-Formal, and raffle off baskets at the boys basketball in an effort to raise money.” She adds, “The girl who raises the most money for the American Heart Association thought the month of February wins the

title.”

Mrs. Borden explains that the girls benefit from competing in this completion stating: “This is an excellent opportunity for the girls to represent their commitment and service for our community. It allows them to make a difference on national level with the American Heart Association.”

Fund-raising concludes February 28, but the winner will not be announced until the middle to end of March.

The Clearfield candidates this year are: Sierra Knepp, Kate Lansberry, Nikki Brossard, Makayla Ross, Aspen Bishop, Jaclyn Freeman, Brooke Cline, Brittani Walker, Lauren Butler, Talitha Narehood, and Shaylee Wagoner.

In addition, Mrs. Borden is selling T-Shirts to benefit the American Heart Association in her room, 320. They are $10 and come in sizes small to extra-large.
