Can Rampage Break The Game To Movie Curse?
May 29, 2018
Another year, another video-game based movie that doesn’t really live up to any form of standard. The film Rampage is based off of the 1986 video game Rampage, in which you play as one of three monsters: George (a giant gorilla), Lizzie (a giant alligator), or Ralph (a giant wolf).
I’ll start off by saying that it’s an okay movie as most movies based off games are. They just can’t seem to hit it out of the park. That doesn’t, however, mean it wasn’t a fun or enjoyable movie.
Rampage features an actually strong cast of characters. Actors in the lead are Dwayne Johnson, Joe Manganiello, Breanne Hill, Jeffery Dean Morgan and Naomie Harris. Even with such an impressive group of actors, the movie falls short at times. At times it attempts to be funny while maintaining some level of seriousness which can either make or break a film. In this case the jokes tend to fall flat.
The basic plot of the movie is that Davis Okoye is a primatologist (study of primates) who shares a bond with an albino gorilla named George. After an experiment goes wrong George turns into a rampaging monster. It’s up to Davis, Agent Russel (Jeffery Dean Morgan), Burke (Joe Manganiello), and Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) to stop him. Along the way they discover that two more animals, Lizzie the alligator and Ralph the wolfare both effected by the experiment. It’s up to the heroes to stop the monsters from destroying the city.
Does Rampage end the cycle of bad video game movies? The answer is not really. While it’s fun and pretty cheap entertainment, it is a little bit long clocking in at about 2 hours. It’s enjoyable for what it is though, a movie about giant monsters fighting each other in a city.
