Back on May 1, the Clearfield High School Chapter of the FFA took a trip to the Curwensville Dam to participate with other FFA teams in what is commonly known as Envirothon.

In the competition, school teams are divided into even groups and each teammate specializes in a particular category while the team works together to take a series of tests of knowledge.

There were five different categories: Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and Current Events. Overall from the six different schools attending, West Branch did best, but the students of Clearfield High gave it their best shot and hope to do better next year. In this author’s opinion, it was a very enjoyable experience to meet some new people from other school districts that take a common interest in the outdoors, Pennsylvania’s wildlife and agriculture.

The purpose of this event is to help students learn to work as a team as every test is discussed with the whole team whether they specialize in the category or not. Students are selected from a series of tests conducted by Mrs. Carr to help her decide who is right for the job.

FFA member Cole Smay stated, “It was a great experience to be outside of school all day and to talk to different people about the issues this state has with the changing ecosystem and how the professionals have been dealing with it and coming up with solutions to some very major issues.”

Students from Clearfield Area Junior-Senior High who participated include Haley Owens, Sam Carnes, Kyler Rosinsky, Megan Durandetta, Luke Witheright, Cole Smay, Philip Rowles, Clayton Brown, Charles Gardner, and Alex Clark.
