‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ will have you hooked
December 7, 2018
The story of Sabrina the teenage witch has been around for years. In 1962, she was first introduced in Archie Comics, and it became a comic series. The story was created by George Gladir and it’s about the adventures of Sabrina Spellman, who is a witch. The comic soon turned into a television show in 1996 as an American sitcom, with many animated versions as well.
The 1996 American sitcom was full of fun adventures and many comedic parts. But Netflix just released a newer version called “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” that’s more freaky and scary. Far from the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch, this chilling new version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch stars Kieran Shipka as Sabrina and Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle. Also, Lucy Davis and Miranda Otto play Sabrina’s aunts, Hilda and Zelda Spellman. The pilot was directed by Lee Toland Krieger and written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, along with other producers Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater.
The show is set in the 1960s. In this version, Sabrina must choose between signing her name away to the dark lord at her dark baptism and continuing her fate in the witch world, or staying with her friends in the moral world. Sabrina’s aunt, Zelda, strongly pushes Sabrina to participate in her dark baptism on her 16th birthday, whereas Hilda wants her to be happy and choose for herself. Sabrina is very fond of her friends and she doesn’t want to leave them, especially her boyfriend, Harvey, who plans for their future not knowing what Sabrina is.
Not only does Sabrina have a big decision to make, she also has many evil presences who have future plans for her, one of whom is called Madam Satan, who is played by Michelle Gomez. These evil presences try everything they can to get Sabrina to choose to sign her name away to the dark lord, but Sabrina is a very opinionated woman who has other plans.
I enjoyed that the story was more scary and dark, but still had that “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” effect with it. It has many dark elements that gives you chills and many suspenseful moments that will entertain many mature audiences and teenagers. I also loved that Sabrina was portrayed as a strong, independent woman who is the hero of the story.
I liked that many of the characters portray the same role as the previous versions and I also liked that they added new characters, although some of the attitudes of the characters are different. For example, the one aunt, Zelda is very pushy towards Sabrina and portrays more of a dark role. But Hilda, portrays herself as the “good aunt”, which is great for the storyline of Sabrina choosing between the dark side and the mortal side.
Every episode has a different adventure that adds more to the story, and it eventually builds up to the season finale. Also the magic is amazing; it’s more dark, creepy, and mysterious rather than fun and goofy. The show brings to light more of the magic and adventure, along with detailed background stories, that helps the audience understand on why the events are happening and explains more of what is going on in the story.
I recommend The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to anyone who is interested in the suspenseful, mystery genre. This version is different and much more than the original versions, but it’s a fantastic story with many more added details and dark magic. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will have you hooked and wanting more.
